These are fully furnished, customized horse pack trips. The length of stay can vary from 2 to 10 days with a wide variety of destinations to choose from. We will set your itinerary depending on your desired activities. Once you are at your lakeshore camp, you can fish, relax or explore the wilderness with day rides or day hikes. Horse Owners Vacation
This is a great way to enjoy the back country with your own horse. The professionals at Sawtooth Wilderness Outfitters will provide a comfortable camp, great outdoor cooking, pack stock, horse feed and will be there to help you improve your back country skills and learn new ones. This trip is for the novice horse owner, the experienced horseman with limited stock and equipment, or those that would like to enjoy the back country and not be burdened with the chores of packing camp and meal preparations.

These trips can be customized to your desired length of stay and destination within the Sawtooth Wilderness.

All Ladies Rides
These trips are customized for ladies only. Come join us on a fully furnished horse back vacation into the heart of the Sawtooth Wilderness. We will ride to and camp by a beautiful crystal clear lake.  While on your trip you can relax, enjoy great fishing, hike to other lakes or explore other drainages on day rides.  This vacation is fully furnished with camping equipment, food, cook, packer and horse feed if you choose to bring your own horse. All you need to bring is your personal gear, sleeping bag, fishing tackle and license. There are two options to choose from, ride your own horse or use one of ours. Good food, great company, and no outside distractions will truly let you get away from it all!  Please contact us to check on the dates for this years specialty trips. Packing School
This is a hands on packing school that will help you improve your back country skills and learn new ones. This course is designed for the horseman that already has basic riding skills. The first day of the school will be held at the barn where you will learn the basics of horse packing. Your instructions will include tack adjustment and care; how to manty your gear and balance your loads. You will also learn the barrel and basket hitches for a Decker saddle and the diamond hitch for a Sawbuck saddle.

The next morning you will prepare your equipment, pack your horse and lead your string to a back country destination. Some of the other topics that will be covered are low impact camping, back country ethics, care of livestock in the back country, emergency horse first aid and meal planning and preparation. We will provide your meals and horse feed while at the school and all stock and equipment if you do not bring your own.

Cost: 3 day school: $550.00 per person plus tax.
Cost: 5 day school: $950.00 per person plus tax.

Spot Packing Service
This packing service will take you and your equipment into the Sawtooth Wilderness to the destination of your choice. These trips allow you the freedom of camping on your own while enjoying some of the items that are too heavy for the backpacker to carry. Prices are based on a 150 pound weight limit per pack horse and an eight hour round trip day.  Along with the weight, it is important to remember that the size of your items are a factor on how much you can put on a horse.  Try to minimize both the size and weight of all items.  Because of the sheer bulk of items and the size of the pack a horse can carry, loads may not always be able to weigh 150 pounds.

Cost: $125.00 per horse per day plus tax.
5 Horse minimum.  4 client horses + guide's horse.

Trail Rides
We offer trail rides from Grandjean, Idaho. Our gentle mountain horses and experienced guides will escort you through the back country on a horseback adventure.


Hour Rides: A great way to get a taste of a back country horse adventure. Fun for beginners and experts alike.
Cost: $30.00 per person plus tax.

Half Day Rides: This 4 hour ride takes you into the Wilderness for a sightseeing adventure.
Cost: $85.00 per person plus tax.

Full Day Rides: This 8 hour ride will take you into the Wilderness to explore its beauty.
Cost: $125.00 per person plus tax. Lunch is provided.

Half and Full day rides begin at 8:00am. No horses go out without a guide.

Wilderness and Whitewater Adventures
Experience Idaho's beauty from Wilderness to Whitewater. This is a 5-day, 4-night, fully furnished adventure. Begin your trip with a challenging, two-day whitewater float trip on the South Fork of the Payette river. You will experience spectacular scenery, natural hot springs, and outstanding outdoor cooking. You will then spend the night in a high mountain hotel where dinner and a hot bath await you. After a hearty breakfast your wilderness horseback adventure begins. Your experienced guide will take you on a three day trip to a remote lake shore camp where you can fish, sightsee and have a chance to explore and enjoy the solitude of this vast wilderness.

Two Day Float and Three Day Pack Trip.

Complete Vacation Packages
These packages provide a complete vacation starting and ending at the Boise, Idaho airport. We will pick you up and transport you to your first nights lodging. Dinner is on your own at a near by restaurant. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, you will start the trip of your choice. While on the trip everything is provided including complete camps, meals, cook and guide.

On the last day of your trip, after a hearty breakfast, we will pack up camp and ride to Grandjean where a fireside Bar-B-Q is served. We will then transport you to your nights lodging. The next morning breakfast is on your own and you will catch your flight home.

PRICE INCLUDES: Transportation to and from Boise, Idaho airport, one nights lodging before and one nights lodging after pack trip, meals while on the trip, camping equipment with sleeping pad.

PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE: Personal gear, sleeping bag, (rentals are available at $20.00 per trip), fishing license and tackle, dinner the night before trip or breakfast the morning of plane departure, gratuities, add on activities or airfare.

5 Day Guided Pack Trip.

Booking Information

A 40% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your dates.  Although deposits are non-refundable, they are transferable to another person for the same trip.  Balance is due 30 days before your trip begins.  In addition to the base price, Idaho also requires a 6% sales tax.  Cashier's check, money order, personal check, Visa or Master Card are all accepted.

There is a minimum requirement of 4 people to start all guided trips.  We often combine smaller groups to meet our minimum requirements.

All over night guided trips include clean, comfortable tent camps, meals while on your trip, cook and guide.  You will need to provide your own sleeping bag, fishing license, tackle and personal gear.  Sleeping bag rentals are available at $20.00 per bag per trip.

Gratuities are not mandatory, however, it is customary to tip your guide, packer and cook if you feel they did a good job for you.

Clients are responsible for letting the outfitter know of any special medical and dietary needs prior to trip.  Special dietary needs can easily be accommodated with advance notice.

Sawtooth Wilderness Outfitters is a member of the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association, America Outdoors National Outfitter and Guides Association, bonded and licensed by the State of Idaho and permitted on the Boise National Forest and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.  All of our guides are professionals who are licensed by the State of Idaho and meet current first aid requirements.
